Bio Economy Ecosystem Mapping Project North Middle Sweden

Accelerate North Middle Sweden’s bio-economy transition into the smart industries of the future. Thus strengthening the region’s industrial and innovative fabric and connectivity between SMEs and their ability to create new products and services.

Project Vision

Accelerate North Middle Sweden’s transition into the smart industries of the future. North Middle Sweden’s Best Practice Bio-Economy Ecosystem Mapping Project will enhance the region’s industrial and innovative fabric and connectivity between companies. This Best Practice project builds on Sweden’s Smart Specialisation priorities by:

“Strengthening the competitiveness of regions by identifying areas within which the region has a potential for growth. It is about existing areas of strength as well as developing new areas” (Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth).

Swedish First

Through its uncompromising thirst for knowledge and investment in the future, Sweden has maintained its top two ranking as one of the most innovative countries in the world.

In a Swedish first, North Middle Sweden’s Best Practice Bio-Economy Ecosystem Mapping Project builds on this proud tradition.

This ambitious ecosystem mapping project utilises advanced spatial and data analytics to delve into the new economy’s dynamics driving:

  • business performance

  • innovation

  • Industry 4.0

  • the circular economy; and the

  • the ability of gender-balanced teams to drive innovation and new product development

It then applies this strategic intelligence to manufacture the region’s competitive strengths and innovative milieu to put 100 per cent of its diverse talent to work.

Winning Contracts

The key aim of this project is to:

  • Pinpoint synergies between companies; that can

  • Fast track business partnerships so they can win new contracts.

Transformational Results - New Business Partnerships, Contracts and Investments

What Company CEOs are Saying

“By partnering with Structor, a civil engineering company we were able to integrate our companies’ combined capabilities to win a new contract with Sweden’s largest home design and building company. Together we were then able to win a government grant to develop the zero-emissions home. This is something which would not have occurred without Rodin’s cluster process.”

Gabriella Hagman, CEO, Mondo Architects, Sweden

“This has really been an inspiring and eye-opening experience. Rodin and the team from Dalarna Science Park and ByggDialog, are helping our company to introduce circular economy 'ways of thinking and develop new strategic partnerships that can unlock new circular inspired market opportunities.”

Kristina Hansen, Managing Director, Structor Byggteknik Dalarna AB, Sweden

“Working with Rodin has been a real eye-opener. Opening up our industrial ecosystem and seeing the underutilised potential, has led me to speed up our investment in IT systems. And through a strategic partnership, he created between my company and a sawmill we have accelerated the process of that company investing in a new state of the art surface treatment plant.”

Jonas Fred Hell, founder and CEO of Fridh and Hell’s, Sweden

“The North Middle Sweden project has delivered for my company a significant commercial result. Through the collaboration process and high trust environment generated through this project, we were able to realise our vision of designing and building a zero-carbon residential house of the future. One that will no doubt anchor future commercial benefits to our shareholders as we deliver a sustainability dividend for the community.”

Gunnar Jonsson, CEO, Fiskarhedenvillan, Borlange, Sweden

Launch of the new book, Constructing Swedish Sovereignty by Rodin Genoff with Graeme Sheather

Results of the North Middle Sweden Bio-economy Ecosystem Mapping project will be published in the new book Constructing Swedish Sovereignty. It will be launched in October 2022.

The book offers interested readers the opportunity to discover how strategic intelligence generated through the ecosystem mapping process has resulted in a number of transformative collaborations and joint ventures leading to for example the creation of Women Building Sweden, VillaZero and a new state of the art sawmill.

The book is being published by Dalarna Science Park and the Regional Swedish Banking Association in collaboration with project partners, Paper Province, IUC and ByggDialog.

North Middle Sweden Bioeconomy Ecosystem – Intersection of Industry 4.0 and the Circular Economy

The North Middle Sweden Bioeconomy Ecosystem mapping project focussed on forestry and the complex industrial ecosystem centring around the building and construction industries, as shown in the diagram opposite.

This exciting ecosystem is where Industry 4.0 meets circular economy.

IoT services, automation, and architectural design intersect to drive new value creation in the building and construction industry from the use of cross-laminated timber to investment in a new generation of sawmills in tune with consumers and the need to deliver zero-carbon projects.

And as they invest in a circular economy future, manufacturing and engineering companies are stepping up to help them retool and navigate an innovative, sustainable and prosperous future.

About This Project

The Dalarna Region has since July 2017 been the project owner of ‘Smart Industry North Middle Sweden’. The project is an output of the New Industrialisation Strategy that the Government established in 2015. North Middle Sweden comprises the counties of Gävleborg, Dalarna and Värmland. The region has agreed to implement a “mapping and cluster development pilot” with the focus on creating a platform for business development and strengthening the value chains in industrial wood construction with a strong focus on circular economy and gender diversity.

The target group for the sub-project include stakeholders from all parts of the ‘Smart Building’ value chain, from wood components and wood composites to design and the broader building and construction and related engineering sectors. The work primarily involves engaging with companies in Dalarna and Värmland.
