NORTH MIDDLE SWEDEN’S
BEST PRACTICE BIO-ECONOMY
ECOSYSTEM MAPPING PROJECT
Sept 2019
Introduction
North Middle Sweden’s Best Practice Bio-Economy Ecosystem Mapping Project commenced in 2019 and was interrupted with the onset of Covid-19. Nonetheless, along with the project team at Dalarna Science Park, ByggDialog, IUC and Paper Province, we were able to complete an ambitious project and deliver some transformative results – ones that are making a difference.
In a Swedish first, we not only mapped the ecosystem of the region’s bio-economy and its connectivity between companies but audited the performance of participating companies across the following areas:
Business performance.
Openness to new ideas.
Propensity to be collaborative.
Innovative capacities and capabilities.
Utilisation of digital platforms to support co-creation and product development opportunities.
Ability to embrace and transition to Industry 4.0.
Ability to plan for and transition into circular economy activities.
Tapping gender diversity to drive innovation and market development.
Thriving Business Partnerships
We then took this industry intelligence to create a series of new business partnerships spinning off new innovations, circular inspired building projects and investment.
Highlights include:
Integration of business and technical capabilities between Mondo Architects and structural engineering company, Structor. This led to:
Further collaboration between this new joint venture and Fiskarhedenvillan, Sweden’s largest home building company to create VillaZero, Sweden’s first carbon-neutral residential home.
A strategic business partnership between sawmill Hilmer Andersson and building and construction company Fridh and Hell’s. This led to:
Fast-tracking an investment to build a new state of the art surface treatment plant at the sawmill and a plan to invest in greater digital integration between the companies to support design, scheduling, production and logistics.
Sparking the creation of Women Building Sweden, a new business network of female CEOs and senior managers in the construction sector to support new circular, innovation and investment opportunities! A women’s construction team is now building VillaZero!
